Who says learning can’t be delicious?! 😋

Students in Foods 1 got a taste of fair food favorites as they made homemade funnel cakes! 🎡🤍

But there’s more to a funnel cake than powdered sugar and deliciousness! Students practiced important culinary skills while learning about:

👩‍🍳 Measuring & Mixing — Accurate measurements help create the right batter consistency.

🔥 Heat & Cooking — Students learned how oil temperature affects cooking, texture, and browning.

🧪 Food Science — As the batter hit the hot oil, water in the batter turned to steam while the outside browned through the Maillard reaction, creating that crispy, golden finish.

🤝 Kitchen Skills — From preparing ingredients to safely working around hot oil, students practiced teamwork, responsibility, and proper kitchen procedures.

And, of course… the best part: taste testing! 😂🍰

From the classroom to the kitchen, our Vikings are learning skills they can use for life—and maybe even for their next trip to the county fair! 🎡

📸 Say Cheese! Our Yearbook Staff Is Putting Their Photography Skills to Work! 📸

Our Yearbook class recently welcomed Chandler Queen, a real estate photographer with a B.S. in Commercial Photography, who shared professional tips and techniques for capturing great photos. 📷

After learning from Chandler, our staff members put their new skills to the test with a Photo Scavenger Hunt! 🔎📸 Teams were challenged to capture creative photos while thinking about composition, perspective, lighting, storytelling, and what makes a photo yearbook-worthy.

But the competition didn't stop there! After the hunt, staff members participated in a photo critique, where they reviewed and awarded points to their fellow teams. 🏆

The team with the most points earned an awesome prize: FIRST PICK of the yearbook pages they get to work on! 🎉

We had a great time learning, creating, competing, and—most importantly—thinking like photographers and storytellers.

Now comes the exciting part... choosing which of these scavenger hunt photos might make it into the 2026–27 North Stokes High School Yearbook! 📖✨

A huge thank-you to Chandler Queen for sharing professional photography knowledge with our students and helping our Yearbook staff see photography from a whole new perspective!

🪵🔨 FROM SCRAP WOOD TO SOMETHING SPECIAL! 🧂🫙

Mr. Taylor’s 1st Period Carpentry students turned leftover materials into something useful—and they put some serious woodworking skills to work! 👏

Students created these custom salt and pepper shakers by laminating two different types of wood together to create a unique finished product. 🌳🪵

Along the way, students practiced:
📏 Measurement & precision – accurately measuring and planning where each hole needed to go.
🛠️ Drill Press skills – boring the passages for the salt and pepper.
🔧 Router operation – finishing and shaping the edges for a smooth, professional look.
✨ Finishing techniques – applying mineral oil to protect and enhance the natural beauty of the wood.

But there’s an even bigger lesson behind these shakers! ♻️🌎

The wood came from scrap pieces left over from previous projects, giving students a hands-on lesson in Green Construction: Reuse & Recycle. Instead of throwing usable materials away, they found a new purpose for them!

This is more than a woodworking project—it’s problem-solving, precision, creativity, craftsmanship, and sustainability all rolled into one! 💚🖤

📖 1 Timothy 4:12 reminds us:

Being a teenager comes with plenty of choices—when to speak up, who to listen to, what to post, how to treat others, and whether to do what we know is right even when nobody is watching.

Sometimes we think, “I’ll do it later.”
“I know I should, but not right now.”
“I’ll make that change eventually.”

But God calls us to act on what we know is right—not just when it is convenient.

💡 Your age is not an excuse to wait. Your youth is an opportunity to lead.

You can be an example TODAY—in the classroom, on the field, in the hallway, online, and with your friends.

Our Foods 1 students are getting into the fall spirit with a delicious batch of Pumpkin Spice Pancakes! 🍁🍂

But this activity is about more than just making something yummy—it’s a chance for students to practice important nutrition and food preparation skills!

👩‍🍳 What are students learning?
🎃 Pumpkin Power: Pumpkin provides nutrients like vitamin A and fiber, making it a flavorful addition to recipes.

🥞 Food Science: Students learn how ingredients work together to create the texture, flavor, and rise we expect in pancakes.

⚖️ Measuring Matters: Accurate measuring is an important kitchen skill. Too much or too little of an ingredient can change the final product!

🔥 Kitchen Safety: From proper cooking temperatures to safe food handling, students are building skills they can use both in the classroom and at home.

🍁 And the best part? They get to enjoy the delicious results of their hard work!
